From 1905 to 1912, the home owner
of the Olde Towne Inn was Charles Z. Candler, a young physician, who
studied at Emory University's Medical School and began practicing medicine
in Dillsboro in 1901. Dr. Candler built the first local hospital near
the Sylva Courthouse and was instrumental in the founding of the Harris
General Hospital. An interesting twist of history is that during the
American Revolution, Dr. Candler's great-grandfather Zachariah Candler,
fought in the Battle of King's Mountain as did former innkeeper s Chitwood's
great-great-grandfather, Captain James Chitwood. But, they were on opposite
sides. Capt. Chitwood, a Loyalist, was captured and hung.
